1. A square or band is loose or missing

If a square (bracket) or band (metal ring) is loose remove it if you can. Place wax or soft sugar-free gum over if it irritates the mouth, and clean well around it. Call us during office hours to book an appointment for a repair.

2. The wire is sharp, has come out, or is broken

Place wax or soft sugar-free gum over any poking sharp end. If this doesn’t help and you can, gently pull a broken wire out. Call to book an appointment for a repair.

3. Getting an ulcer

Place wax or soft sugar-free gum over any part of the brace that is causing the irritation. If this doesn’t help call for an appointment. In the meantime rinse the area twice daily using an antiseptic mouthwash such as Corsodyl.

4. Painful or loose teeth

It is normal to experience sore teeth during the treatment. It is also normal that the teeth become loose- it’s the only way that they will move. Teeth will usually be tender for about a week after each visit to adjust the brace.

Take a painkiller to help and continue to chew as normal. If you have severe pain and more than a week has gone by- please contact us for an appointment.

5. Pain when wearing elastic rubber bands

Wearing elastics will cause sore teeth when you start wearing them. Once the teeth begin to move, this soreness will go away (after around 3-4 days). Continue to wear the rubber bands during this initial period of soreness and take pain killers if necessary. If you have severe pain and more than a week has gone by- please contact us for an appointment.

6. Missing modules

Modules are the clear elastic ties that are placed around the brackets of your braces. a tooth can move away from the wire if a module is missing. Call us during office hours to book an appointment to replace the missing modules.

7. Gaps are appearing between the teeth

It is normal for gaps to appear between your teeth during the treatment. We will close these gaps before the end of your treatment.

Call us for an appointment. A new impression will be taken and we would fit a replacement within two weeks. A charge will apply.

2. The appliance is broken

Please call for an appointment. If the appliance can be repaired, an impression will be taken with the appliance in the mouth. We would normally fit the repaired appliance within a week. If it cannot be repaired an impression will be taken for a new one and a charge will apply.

3. The appliance does not fit

Call for an appointment. If we cannot make it fit because you haven’t been wearing it as instructed, then it will have to be replaced and a charge will apply.

4. Getting pain

It is normal to experience some pain when first wearing the appliance. The pain will go away after a few days if you continue wearing it and a painkiller will help. Call for an appointment if the pain continues more than a week.

The pain will go away if you stop wearing the appliance for long periods. However, the teeth will not straighten, and the appliance may not fit later.

5. Getting an ulcer

If you experience an irritation from a sharp wire place wax or soft sugar-free gum. Call for an appointment.

If the ulcer is the result of pressure from the appliance on the gum then stop wearing it and call us for an appointment. Please wear the appliance the day before coming in to see us. An antiseptic mouth rinse twice-daily will help in the meantime.


1. An aligner is broken or lost

Try to wear the next aligner in the series if you have it. Use your aligner-chew to press it into position. If it does not appear to fit then wear the previous aligner in the series.

Book an appointment to see us as soon as possible so that we can check. If we have to replace the missing aligner a charge may apply.

2. An aligner does not fit or is too tight

Try and wear the previous aligner an extra week. Thereafter, try to wear the next aligner again. Book an appointment to see us if the issue persists.

3. Lost aligners

Contact us for an appointment. We will need to order replacements if you have lost a number of aligners. A fee may apply.

4. An attachment has come off a tooth

Attachments are made from tooth-coloured material that is glued to the teeth. Please contact us for an appointment to replace the missing attachment. Continue to wear your current aligner in the meantime.

Avoid moving the implant with your finger or tongue. Call us for an appointment.

2. The gum is swollen around the implant

Clean gently and carefully around the implant. Rinse your mouth twice-daily with an antiseptic mouth rinse such as Corsodyl. Call us for an appointment.

3. Getting an ulcer on the cheek or lip

Place wax or soft sugar-free gum over the implant. Rinse your mouth twice-daily with an antiseptic mouth rinse such as Corsodyl. Call us for an appointment.

4. The implant has fallen out

Rinse your mouth twice-daily with an antiseptic mouth rinse such as Corsodyl and call us for an appointment.


The Mouthguard is loose, does not fit well, or causes ulcers

Come in with your mouthguard and we will try to adjust it.

We consider any injury to the face an urgent emergency that requires immediate attention and possibly antibiotics. If the injury is to an eye please make your way to A&E immediately.
