Functional Appliances

1. The appliance is lost

Call us for an appointment. A new impression will be taken and we would fit a replacement within two weeks. A charge will apply.

2. The appliance is broken

Please call for an appointment. If the appliance can be repaired, an impression will be taken with the appliance in the mouth. We would normally fit the repaired appliance within a week. If it cannot be repaired an impression will be taken for a new one and a charge will apply.

3. The appliance does not fit

Call for an appointment. If we cannot make it fit because you haven't been wearing it as instructed, then it will have to be replaced and a charge will apply.

4. Getting pain

It is normal to experience some pain when first wearing the appliance. The pain will go away after a few days if you continue wearing it and a painkiller will help. Call for an appointment if the pain continues more than a week.

The pain will go away if you stop wearing the appliance for long periods. However, the teeth will not straighten, and the appliance may not fit later.

5. Getting an ulcer

If you experience an irritation from a sharp wire place wax, BraceEze, or soft sugar-free gum. Call for an appointment.

If the ulcer is the result of pressure from the appliance on the gum then stop wearing it and call us for an appointment. Please wear the appliance the day before coming in to see us. An antiseptic mouthrinse twice-daily will help in the meantime.
